Linnton Community Center Programs & Activities
- After School Activities Club for school age children & teens: Children & teens arrive at Linnton Community Center on school buses from Skyline Elementary, West Sylvan Middle School & Lincoln High School. This gives them a safe, supervised fun place to be after school while they wait for their folks to pick them up on their way home from work.
Children enjoy gym time, organized games, and time to visit with their friends. School busses open their doors directly in front of the community center. The children are then accompanied downstairs to the gym. The children that walk directly home are supervised or escorted across St. Helens Rd. depending on their maturity level This club includes Homework Team, a healthy snack & before school Breakfast Club. Children can attend every day or occasionally.
The teens sometimes just visit with friends, play basketball or gain community service experience by volunteering. There is no charge to middle school & high school students. Cost is 50.00 per month for Skyline children. Call Daniel 503-286-4990 for information.
- Homework Team with Kate: This is part of our After School Activities program & comes at no charge to those whose parents wish them to attend. Kate is a certified teacher that volunteers her time for this program. She helps kids with organizational skills, acts as a "homework mentor", helps kids pace long term assignments , contacts parents about impending long term projects if needed, searches through backpacks and finds those wadded up sheets of homework that should have been turned in.
- State Certified child Care & Preschool for children 3 years and older: This begins at 6:45 AM & ends at 6:00 pm. Call 503-286-4990 for information or look under child care on this web site.
- Luncheon of the Elders Program & Potluck : Held in the gym at noon on the Fourth Wednesday of every month except for November & December, it is held on the third Wednesday. This is meant for people that come from all areas to meet with old friends and socialize. Some were born & raised in Linnton. All have a special connection with Linnton. Some still live here. Occasionally people fly in from other parts of the country to come “home” to the place of their childhoods and reconnect with their past. This event is usually well attended. Sometimes people that haven’t been “home” to the Linnton Community Center for more than fifty years show up. Different people often fill the chairs each month, but the chairs always seem to fill. To attend just show up. Linnton Community Center provides the main dish , service ware, condiments, coffee, punch & bread.
- Sunday Night Young Peoples Basketball: This program is offered every Sunday evening at 6:30 pm all year round. This gives teens a safe supervised place to be. Amos @ 503-849-8680 or Angel @ 503-975-2099
- Tuesday Night Basketball: Offered year round & open to men and women of all ages. Some have been participated in this program for almost thirty years. Some are seventy plus years old. There are very serious basketball games played these evenings. This dedicated group played basketball every Tuesday evening against all odds. After the embezzlement of 1999 there was no heat in the building & the water poured into the gym every time it rained & the building smelled of mold. They played after everyone else had given up & they were the only program left at the community center. That was years ago & now thanks to a grant from Meyer Memorial Trust the gym is shiny & new. See our list of supporters on this web site.
- Karate: This program is offered every Wednesday and every other Friday between 5:30 and 6:30 and continues until 7:00 for the more advanced. Call Dante’ 503-201-0729 for information. This program is for adults, teenagers, or older children with a high level of maturity & a sincere interest in Karate. Occasionally a group of black belts volunteer their time to assist with coaching this class.
- Teen Club: We try to encourage leadership in local teens by assisting them in making their ideas about things they would like to see happen or do become reality. They have organized fundraisers. They raise the money to pay for the teen activities. These activities serve the local teens as well as teens from other parts of Portland and the surrounding areas. Examples are chaperoned and alcohol free dances and seasonal events. This program teaches focuses on leadership skills and community service. Call Pat for information. 503-475-3731.
- Moms Time: This program we will be starting. It will offer a time for mothers and their infants to meet other mothers, socialize and share information. Some of these women have quit jobs to stay home with their newborns. The birth of a child is a major change in a womans life. Many women experience depression and isolation with the major life style changes that occur after the birth of a baby and the loss of the work environment. Women in this area are particularity affected by this as they are living in a somewhat isolated community.
- Senior Outreach: Demographically Linnton has a somewhat larger proportion of seniors than other parts of Portland. Some of our seniors attending our programs live in other areas of Portland but still feel connected to Linnton and turn to LCC to meet some of their needs. Seniors are at a time in their lives where great losses are experienced.
We feel part of our job is to keep contact with seniors and help them throughout difficult times, encouraging socialization, and preventing isolation. We make every attempt to see that all of their basic needs are met. It is well documented that depression can be a major problem in the lives of seniors. We see our role at LCC as proactive in keeping these seniors engaged in life. However due to lack of funds we have not been able to implement this program on a consistent basis.
- Food baskets: Through a partnership with the Oregon Food Bank food baskets are distributed to the needy once a week & as needed. This program has become quite popular. We are currently serving approximately 40 to 70 families weekly in this program. We always need volunteers to help with this. Call Daniel at 503-286-4990 for information.
- Kids Night Out: We hope to start his program again, when we can find a person to staff it. Offered the first Friday of every month this is a supervised activity program for children from 6 until 10 pm. This includes gym play, dinner, a movie and popcorn. This gives parents a chance for a regularly scheduled evening out for themselves. This gives the parents a chance to nurture their relationships with each other.
- Neighborhood Meetings and regularly scheduled Neighborhood Potlucks:
We provide a public meeting space for community residents. Our potlucks provide a time for people to visit with neighbors and to meet new ones. This is a very important factor in combating the sense of isolation that can so easily overtake people in this community. These occur the first Wednesday of every odd month @ 7:00 pm. Potluck starts @ 6:30 pm. Call Neighbors West Northwest for information 503-823-4288 for information.
- Scrapbooking Class: This class will start when we find a teacher. This is a time for people to get together in a group, socialize and put their home photo albums together. This is also a time to learn to do some very beautiful things to display our photographs in an album. Call Pat at 503-475-3731 for information.
- Homeless outreach: A team of volunteers and staff make every effort to visit homeless camps in the Linnton area to assess needs and extend help as needed. We also provide a shower and free telephone for their use. We also provide brochures at no cost demonstrating how to prepare the fish caught from the Portland Harbor Superfund Site (mainly Linnton) safely. This brochure is available at the Linnton Community Center free to all. It is in the downstairs lobby.
Acknowledging that many people depend on fish from the Linnton area for sustenance this brochure was created to identify which breeds of fish are safest to eat, which ones to avoid, how to prepare them to remove the parts where the toxins are stored & amounts safe for different groups of people to consume per week. This Brochure was created as the product of a partnership between the Linnton Community Center, the Oregon Department of Human Services and the Benson High school Health Occupation Program to meet a need.
- Skate Nights: Usually on Friday night. Because of the steep terrain and lack of sidewalks, children in this area do not learn to ride bikes or roller skate unless they come to our community center. Skate nights are run by a volunteer & open to all ages. There are not any set dates for these, although we attempt to have them once a month. This program is run by a volunteer.
- Children’s summer camp: This is a theme based camp. Each theme lasts for two weeks, Children come as early as 7:00 am and participate in the breakfast club. There is a morning of activities which includes using large motor and fine motor skills. Each day has a separate theme including Science, animals and nature, arts and culture, Spanish, reading and literature & sports and games.
Field trips are planned based on these themes. These field trips allow children who otherwise would not be able to experience the many rich opportunities that our offered throughout the City of Portland. Examples are trips to OMSI, the Zoo & The Audubon Society among others. We occasionally will have a local artist that comes in. We attempt to with different art mediums with the children each week. Once a week a field trip is taken to the Multnomah County Library. This allows the children of this area to participate in the Libraries Summer Reading Program. Library staff work with the children and give rewards for reading independently. The children track their own reading time and turn in their time for credits.
The camp occasionally offers Childrens Cooking Classes. The children often prepare their own afternoon snack with the organically grown produce from their own “community garden”. Some very creative things are done in the Arts & Culture time block. Children enroll in different time blocks depending on their interests & need. Call Daniel 503-286-4990 for information.
- Feldenkrais -(Awareness through movement) Do you have aches & pains? Fatigue? This class is for you. Mondays 11:00 am upper room Call Pat 503- 286-4990 for information.
- Gym Rentals: We rent our gym for special family & cultural events. Examples are baptismal parties, wedding receptions, memorial services & birthday parties. Quinceaneras have become popular on the weekends. Call 503-286-4990 & ask for Daniel to reserve a spot. The community center provides some chairs & tables. Children’s sports groups & nonprofits pay a reduced or no fee to use the gym.
- Special Events: These are events around holidays usually that are offered as a community service. This includes our annual Halloween carnival & Haunted House among others. Call 286-4990 & ask for Daniel for information.
- Multnomah County Sheriffs Satellite office: We have provided office space with a computer & internet access for sheriffs. They have a refrigerator, coffee pot, microwave to heat up their lunches, a restroom & access to a shower, so if they fall down a hill or get body fluids on themselves they have a place to shower. . This gives them a place on the far north end of town to take a break & do their reports during their “dead time” rather than having to drive all the way back to Troutdale. It keeps a police presence in Linnton, which is greatly appreciated.
- Yoga: Tuesday mornings at 11:00 in the upper room. Thursdays at 6:00 pm in the upper room.
